Firefighter Cancer Bill Passes
Legislation allowing firefighters to make a worker's compensation claim for lung cancer and similar smoke-causing diseases as long as they hadn't smoked cigarettes in five years passed the House 81-27.

Under HB 4401, firefighters with respiratory tract, bladder, skin, brain, kidney, blood, and lymphatic cancers could make a claim on the basis that the hazards of the workplace caused the injury. The bill also covers public officials who contract a disease through the handling of hazardous chemicals.

HB 4401, was sponsored by Rep. Steve TOBOCMAN (D-Detroit).

What's Next?
The bill will now go to the Senate where it will be assigned to a committee. The committee may take testimony prior to voting on the bill.

Once it passes out of the committee, Senate Majority Leader Michael Bishop will decide if/when the bill will be voted on by the Senate.
