Dearborn's staffing model and STEMI Project saves lives!

Dearborn's staffing model and STEMI Project saves lives!

  • DBN FD runs an Advanced Life Support Engine Model Response which provides 3 additional Paramedics to the scene who asssist Advanced EMS procedures simultaneously with DFD's Ambulance/Rescue crew
  • DFD average emergency response time is approximately 4 minutes (National Average is 8 minutes with 7 Minutes 59 Seconds used as a benchmark)
  •  From 9-1-1 Call to first 12-Lead EKG average time is 6 Minutes (ALS Engine Company Model allows us to provide incredibly rapid and effective care)
  • Average of 10 to 15 Minutes of On-Scene-Times – typical patients receive a full assessment including 12-Lead EKG that can be transmitted to the Hospital (STEMI Project)
  • STEMI Project in collaboration with Oakwood Hospital Dearborn – 12-Lead EKG immediately transmitted from scene to both ER & Cardiac CATH Lab. The Cardiologist on call also gets a copy of the EKG in real time directly to his cell phone so everyone is on the same page if the patient needs emergency angioplasty.
  • Patients that get to the CATH Lab faster have a lower rate of mortality – the target time set forth by the American Heart Association is 90 minutes – typically patients transported by Dearborn Fire Department have a time to the CATH Lab in 30 to 40 minutes (a reduction of about 1 hour off the national target time).
  • The STEMI program has drastically increased the efficiency of the hospital – resulted in better patient outcomes
  • Of course, in addition to EMS, DFD responds to Fires, Extrication's, Industrial Rescue, and any other emergency a citizen calls on us for help.

Dearborn Fire Had A Busy 2011

In 2011, the Dearborn Fire Department ran 10,843 calls.

(Many calls require multiple apparatus to respond with multiple firefighters/paramedics)

(Dearborn gives one incident number per incident regardless of the number of patients, vehicles involved, or structures involved)

Thank you for a great year!

Dearborn Fire OPS 2011

Dearborn Fire OPS 2011

Dearborn Firefighters would like to thank our guest for attending Fire OPS 2011.  It was an enjoyable and informational day.

MI Senator Hood

Major General Vadnais

Dearborn Councilman O'Donnel

Dearborn Councilman Bazzy

Dearborn Patch Editor, Jessica Carreras

Our guests had the opportunity to wear firefighting gear, fight fires, perform vehicle extrication, and see emergency medical services up close and in person.  While the participants experienced live fire operations, it was all done in a controlled and safe setting thanks to Oakland Community College’s state-of-the-art CREST Training Facility.  Fire OPS is important because it gives our political leaders firsthand knowledge of what we do, why we need the equipment that we do, and demonstrates the need for adequate staffing.  If any of those important pieces are taken away, we are unable to safely and effectively perform our duties as firefighters and paramedics.  We appreciate the participants giving up their day to spend with the Dearborn Firefighters and our Fire OPS program.

Dearborn Fire Department Receives Nearly $1M Grant

The Federal Emergency Management Agency awarded the department a $940,595 grant to be used for the hiring and retaining of firefighters.

The Dearborn Fire Department was awarded a Staffing for Adequate Fire & Emergency Response Grant, U.S. Sens. Carl Levin and Debbie Stabenow announced Wednesday.

The $940,595 grant, awarded through the Federal Emergency Management Agency's Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program, is to be used to aid in the hiring and retaining of fire and emergency medical service staff.

Another $54,204 was awarded to the City of Auburn Hills Fire Department to assist with operations and safety.

Sens. Levin and Stabenow applauded the grants, which come at a time when local funding levels for city services are tight.

“Michigan’s firefighters and first responders play a critical role in keeping us safe and secure,” Levin said. “These federal dollars will help provide them with the resources they need to protect communities across Michigan.”

“These grants will allow our hard-working firefighters to do their job to the best of their ability,” Stabenow said. “They provide an essential service to our communities and we need to ensure they have what they need to protect themselves and protect our families.”

There is no word yet on how the grant funding will affect the city of Dearborn's 2011-12 budget, which is currently being discussed by City Council and must be approved by June 30.

Dearborn Mayor Jack O'Reilly said earlier this month that one area of service he didn't dip into in his proposal to lessen the city's $20 million budget deficit is fire and police staffing.

“I’m not looking at (lowering minimum staffing requirements), and the reason is, I’m a realist,” he said. “I’m not going to go out and ask people to vote to have less police officers.”

The Dearborn Fire Department also received two FEMA grants in 2010 totalling more than $140,000. That funding was used to purchase new hose and nozzles, as well as new extrication equipment.
